We are presently identifying candidates for the following position: Translator – Interpreter for the International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA).
Position Overview: We are seeking experienced bilingual interpreters and translators (English-Spanish-English) to provide high-quality simultaneous and consecutive interpretation services, as well as translation support, for training courses at the International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) in San Salvador, El Salvador. This role supports critical law enforcement training programs focused on topics such as transnational crime, asset forfeiture, cyber investigations, and anti-gang strategies. The work facilitates effective communication between English-speaking instructors and Spanish-speaking participants, ensuring seamless knowledge transfer.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Carefully listens to or reads content—including jargon and acronyms—in the original language.
- Understands and analyzes what is being said or written, and effectively and accurately translates the message, intent, and nuances being communicated.
- Reproduces statements or questions in the desired output language.
- Provides simultaneous interpretation (SI) or consecutive interpretation (CI) depending on the desired outcome.
- Ability to use equipment such as microphones or headsets to ensure precise and timely translations or interpretations.
- Gathers, develops, and maintains lists of terminology and information that may be used in technical translations such as Law enforcement, Government institutions, Security / investigations, Legal or justice sector trainings
- Protects the confidentiality of information and adheres to any related ethical or professional codes.
- Strong understanding of law enforcement terminology and cultural nuances.
- Excellent listening skills and auditory recall to remember spoken words and to accurately reproduce them in the desired language.
- Translate post-course critiques and evaluations for input into the ILEA Global Network (IGN), to be completed no later than one week after each course.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Local National (El Salvador)
- Fluent in English (both oral and written).
- Fluent in Spanish (both oral and written).
- Experience with translation of technical or other specialized written material such as the following: Law enforcement, Government institutions, Security / investigations, Legal or justice sector trainings
- Superior verbal and written communication skills in the applicable languages.
- Proven experience in simultaneous and consecutive interpretation, preferably in legal, law enforcement, or technical fields (e.g., criminal investigations, finance, or cybersecurity).
- Strong understanding of law enforcement terminology and cultural nuances.
- Ability to appropriately understand and respond to culturally sensitive situations, perspectives, and phrases.
- Ability to work well under pressure and in intense situations.
- Reliable transportation to the ILEA site.
- Must be able to pass any required background checks for working in a government-affiliated environment.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional standards in a government-affiliated setting.
- Computer proficiency with web-based applications including Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree preferred, will accept experience in lieu
- Professional certification in interpretation/translation (e.g., court interpreter certification or equivalent) is highly preferred.
Schedule and Course Details—
This is a contract-based position with flexible scheduling across specific course dates in 2026. Generally, 80+ hours per month. Successful candidates will demonstrate exceptional accuracy, professionalism, and the ability to handle complex, technical terminology in a fast-paced environment. Performance is monitored to ensure minimal issues, with a standard of no more than one complaint per month.
- Work hours are typically Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with a welcoming lunch on the first day from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. The position covers 19 specific courses, plus potential additional days. Number of interpreters needed per course varies (one or two).
- Candidates must be available for additional interpretation days (up to 30 days total) for unforeseen events or courses, typically requiring two interpreters per day, with two weeks' advance notice.
- Adapt to potential schedule changes, moves, or cancellations with one week's notice.
